Today marks the 29th Great American Smoke Out, a program of the American Cancer Society (ACS) that encourages smokers to quit for one day, and maybe for good. The health benefits of quitting smoking begin just 20 minutes after the last cigarette, according to ACS.
Planning a formal Quit Day is important for success. ACS recommends those who are attempting to quit should choose a date and mark it on a calendar; tell friends and family about the Quit Day; stock up on oral substitutes such as gum and hard candy; decide whether or not to use nicotine replacement therapy or attend a class; and set up a support system.
ACS emphasizes that successful quitting is a matter of planning and commitment, not luck.
