Exercise-Related Injuries On The Rise For Baby Boomers
Posted on: 11/04/2005

Bicycling, baseball, basketball and running cause the highest-number of sports-related injuries among baby boomers, according to a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission report.

“The volume of people in their 40s, and even in their 30s, coming in with osteoarthritis is much higher than a decade ago,” says Dr. Jess Lonner, director of knee-replacement surgery at Pennsylvania Hospital. “It’s a highly motivated generation that plays harder than a generation ago.”

That doesn’t mean boomers have to take up a sedentary lifestyle. Rather, they should become more educated on how to exercise appropriately and be aware of muscle soreness, joint pain and other signs of physical strain while working out. Aging bodies get injured more easily and also take longer to heal.

Less strenuous activities such as yoga, tai chi and moderate weight training are among recommendations for exercise options that reduce the risk of injury.
